Chapter Eleven- Jayma
In animal studies class, we were watching an "educational" video. What that meant, I had no idea, but I hoped it wouldn't make me hurl. I was a vegetarian--vegan actually--and preferred to not see dead animals, it made me sick.
Sure enough, when I walked into class, we were watching a film about slaugter houses. I cringed, but went to my seat anyway, hoping I could just look away from the screen and be alright.
Yeah, that worked out about as well as a balloon in a porcupine factory... Or was it the other way around? I think it is. Yeah, it sounds better that way.
One I heard the squealing of pigs and the sqwaking of chickens, I ran out the door, covering my mouth with my hand. The teacher, Mr. O'Callaghan, called after me, commanding me to come back or else suffer detention--he's a sadist--but I ignored him, not once stopping until I got home.
I got to the cemetery outside the Davidson home and saw Jamie waiting for me. I knew my phone buzzed on the way here, most likely from him telling me to meet me after school... Had he ditched?
Whatever, I thought. I couldn't be bothered with these questions right now. Placing my hands on a tree, I knelt down and promptly lost my breakfast and Gatorade.
"Jayma?!" Jamie's voice called to me. I couldn't answer him, my mouth tasted disgusting, and I really, really didn't want him to see me like this.
"Go away," I tried to say, but it came out sounding more like, "shema nay," than anything else. I doubt he knew what I meant.
"Jayma, swee--" he hesitated and said, "Jayma, are you alright?"
I tried to nod, but I felt so weak, I couldn't me move my head.
"I'll take that as a no."
I tried to laugh, but it ended up strangling my throat and causing me to throw up again. Okay, no more of that for now.
"Okay, put your arm around me," he insisted.
I complied, but if I threw up on him, it was not my fault. I would buy him a new shirt though, 'cause I'd feel guilty.
I leanded into him, limping along to the nack gates of the Home. He pushed them open and led me inside.
The Davidson Home was completely empty; Ava was accompanying Alison to her doctor's visit and everyone else was at achool. What would happen now, even in my weak--but very vulnerable state?
As soon as we were in my and Alison's room, I raninto the bathroom, brushing my teeth and rinsing with mouthwash until our full bottle only had a small portion of liquid left at the bottom.
I walked back inside the actual room, which consisted of two beds, side by side, two dressers, one for each bed, and a small, walk-in closet.
Jamie was leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets and his eyes closed when I plopped down on the bed.
His eyes snapped open--yes, I was watching him--and he hesitantly stepped towards me. He knelt down--I never realized how tall he was-- and brushed his fingers across my face. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, savoring the moment.
"Jayma?" he asked.
"Yeah?" I sighed, still reeling from his brief touch.
"Mind if I ask you something?"
"You already did," I pointed out. "But sure, go ahead."
"Do you mind if--?" he was much closer now, I could feel his breath fanning across my face. Without opening my eyes, I knew he was just inches--no,centimeters away from my face.
"If what?" I asked, though I already knew what he would say.
He said nothing, only crushed his lips to mine.
Yes, I thought. I wanted this, needed this.
"I love you," I whispered when his lips moved to my neck. They felt like the belonged there, unlike Jared's. It felt normal, right. Like we were made for each other.
