Why do movie producers and directors change the physical appearance of book characters?

It seems that some movie makers are determined to put over an idea that is contrary to the image specified in the text of the books that they bring to the big screen, often with comical or disastrous results.  Does anyone have an opinion of why that is?

In the books Savanna Snow is described as having long blond hair.  Now she is cast as   black? Any of the cheerleaders that are not described by appearance could have been black to add diversity, not Savanna.  Macon was a beau to Ethan's mother, now he is played by a 54 year old when Ethan is 16?   I would have wanted Keifer Sutherland given his capacity to do southern voices, be menacing and charming, and the beauty of casting Donald Sutherland as Abraham and have the family resemblance come through.  The casting sounds like they are re-writing the very nature of the story.

This sounds far too much like the way that they trashed Percy Jackson, the addition of the shrunken head in Harry Potter etc..

I totally agree. I pictured Macon as a younger and handsome guy. Not some old ugly guy.

agrred, honestly, they dont look like the charecters the authors describe.

I honestly am not very excited about this movie I'm actually starting to dread its one thing to altar the characters a little to make a movie because sometimes you have to buy they have gone to far with the changes offer beautiful creatures honestly I feel like this movie will give the books a bad name you need. To know when to leave a good thing alone and obviously those working on this movie don't have the intellect to know that or they just want money which is probably it
